Interesting locks in New York?

Postby lock-ed » 5 May 2011 11:13

Hi,
I am going to New York on vacation next week.

Does anybody know of points of interest with displayed locks? Technical/scientific museum, or other? I am especially interested in safe-locks.

Any tips would be most welcome.

Thx in advance,
Ed

Well, to answer my own question,- Yes there is a VERY interesting place to visit: http://www.generalsociety.org/exhibits/default.asp. According to others, it is one of the largest collections of safelocks in the world.

Unfortunately, I have walked passed it within meters, without knowing. I did not fint out about until I returned home, after my 1 week stay in New York.

However, I have ordered the book,“The Lure of the Lock” by Hopkins, and hope to order the CD of the collection.

Another place I had planned to visit was the Greenwich Locksmith. Unfortunatly, I did not locate it until after closing time on my last day of visit. Will post some nice pictures of its decorated facade(spelling?), with thousands of keys made into different patterns.

Thanks for that link, I'll have to visit there this summer.

When you visit us again, you should go to the Harry C. Miller Lock museum at Lockmasters in Kentucky. (For those who don't know Harry C. Miller was a prolific lock designer who ran Sargent & Greenleaf. He also worked with Walter Evans on a lock that we all love, the 831B, and its variants.

Squelchtone: Thank you for the info! Do you know of any litterature/collections of pictures from them?

After some more googling, I also discovered that a group of british lock-collectors had planned a trip to NY for the sole purpose of visiting the museum. The week before I went! Oh, well,- I might go there in my next life

Here is the storefront of "Greenwich Locksmiths". The decorations are entirely made of keys soldered together.

..other than the nice pictures of large displays?

I followed the link, and also see they have good prices on their books.

Thx again,
Ed
