Keyblank ID & Sourcing Help

Postby KhaziMonster » 20 Sep 2004 8:55

Hi, I am new at this lock stuff, and I am interested in trying my hand at impressioning a lock. I live in scotland, and I have two old locks that I want to practice with.

One of the keys I have is labelled "CER YA85". I went to a shoe repair place and was told that this was a security key, but he was not sure. Does anyone have information on this blank and where I can get one? Or barring that, if there is a key with a similar profile I could use?

I could post a drawing of the key that I have if that would help?

Cheers
Lorin

It would help also if you could tell us the name of the lock probably a yale, also the key doesnt say CEA and not CER does it ? If its a CEA ya85 you should be able to get some blanks just try a locksmith.

The lock is a yale. As for the key, I can't remember if it was CER or CEA. I think CER, but I am not 100% sure. Does it make a difference? I am 100% certain it was ya85 though. The guy at Timpsons had ya84 in his book, but no ya85. I was wondering if someone had a cross reference that showed a ya85 equivalent.

I will go to a proper locksmith tomorrow and ask, but any info would help.

You see, I found this forum a few days ago, and showed it to my flat mate. I thought that this stuff was cool, but he doubted that it could be done. So he bet me £50 that I could not impression the lock to our basement door. He showed me the key for a few minutes, and then took it away.

If I can make another working key by the end of the month, I will be able to take the money off this know-it-all b*stard :D But unless I cheat a little, all the info I have is what I remember.

Cheers for the help.

The chances of you impressioning a lock right from the off are pretty slim. You'll need to read the FAQ's for an overview, but be prepared to ruin a few blanks. Your best bet would be to get maybe five blanks and be prepared to ruin them all. Following the guides will help out greatly though.

Having said that, you could always go through fifty quids worth of blanks getting the job done, but then smile broadly as you take the cash from him, knowing that you've learnt a new skill for no outlay.

Yeah, I know it is not going to be easy. But blanks are relatively cheap, and I have LOTS of time on my hands. The first hurdle is to get the blanks though.

And after this is over, I hope to have enough money from the winnings to buy a set of picks, and then see if I can tempt him into further losses

aldridge do a ya85r which means it is the reverse or mirror image of the keyway but they arent cheap at £2.50 blank for up to 49 blanks or order more than that and the price drops to £1.50 per blank. Oh and of course plus vat.
