Key identification request :)

Hi guys,

I'm not much of a lock picker, in fact the only lock i've picked was a cheapo padlock i had on my knife kit at TAFE when i left my key at home :/

I joined this site in the hope that someone here would have an idea as to what brand/model key i have.

The key is to the front door of my block of units and tbh i'm not too keen on paying $100 + for a copy of a key which is most likely just a normal key with a different top on it to protect it's identity.

I understand a few of you with this hobby may be locksmiths and as such not agree with me, but honestly, there is a fair price, then there is absolute bs pricing, not to mention the bs needed to go through to get a spare key.

If you can't or are unwilling to help i understand, but as they say, if you don't ask you don't receive.

Basically my aim would be to identify the key and purchase a blank or two so i can have spares as my keys tend to go missing when i'm on the drink..along with the money in my wallet

If anyone here could throw up some ideas as to what kind of key it is it would be appreciated.

PS i'm in Australia if this helps at all.

Hmmm..I'm sure one of the Aussies would be glad to help but in the meantime allow me to enlighten you a bit on what you have there.

This is a bit of a guess, but assuming that the bow of the key is indeed a "neuter" bow and does not give a clue as to brand..I would have guessed Arrow or something similar, just a brief glance at the complicated warding leads me to believe that picture depicts a "restricted" key system. Chances are behind that blacked out portion is the name of the company and a phone number, or a non-direct code and a phrase something similar to "do not duplicate."

All that said, $100 for a copy of the key does seem excessive, but combined with "the bs needed to go through to get a spare key." leads me to believe that is NOT a normal key and you likely won't be able to get a copy from anyone other than the company who owns the rights to that particular keyway.

Sorry, but I think you're out of luck on that one.

I generally don't jump on the band wagon we see at this site nearly everyday, with posts putting people down, accusing them of bad things and such, but for reals man, whenever anybody sees a key that has a blacked out portion on the head of the key, one can't help but think your doing something you shouldn't be. Take the sticker off of the head of the key, then ask questions.

That $100 price for your extra key is designed to encourage you to only have one or two copies of the key to the front door of "your block of units" because each key issued is a chance at having it lost and reducing the security of the block of units for all your neighbors whenever that happens until the owner/management re-keys the lock on the common entry door and reissues everyone new keys...

The people here on this site won't help you bypass the security your block of units has, you need to either pay the $100/each the owner/management requires to obtain additional copies of the key to the common door OR move to a place where the keys are cheaper/free...

We won't help people living in condos obtain copies of the key to the pool gate they lost so they can save the $75 key fee to replace it... We won't help someone copy a restricted key for the front door of their apartment building to replace the one they lost so they can get back the $20 key deposit -- so why should we basically make an exception for you and help you out with your identical problem...

Maybe blacked out to keep the locksmith or any form of number which could be used for identification private?

But no i must be a thief or summit eh.

It is a key to the block of Units i live in, yes i know i lost my key, i stuffed up but $100+ is a joke.

Never the less i have found an alternate method of entry and shall not be paying the ridiculous cost of key replacement, so thankyou for the help or lack there of

ok.. so you need an extra key for a mate or a girlfriend who are probably not on the lease or the paperwork stating who lives at the flat, and you're poking around here trying to find help in circumventing the system, and getting pissy with us for not wanting to help you with open arms, so you go and find some other means of entry.

and people wonder why I'm a jerk to new users who come around asking for help about additional keys, or help getting into their locked college dorm rooms, washing machines, etc...
