First pick and wrench. Noob to picking.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I've made my own pick out of metal from the file cabinet hangers. It sucks, because it bends alot. The tension wrench is the worst the other one isn't. This being the first time I've even tried. I failed, I need better tools. :) I am going to either make some better ones or buy them from southord.

Hi roadran422,

welcome to the forum. Not bad for a first try... your picks could work, but you should improve them :)
Try to make them with better raw material, like street cleaning bristles or wiper blade inserts. These materials are a lot better than the file cabinets you used, but are not that hard to work with.

Also, a pick is not finished until it's well sanded and smooth! Let us see your progression :)

Cheers :)

plus one for effort,

skill will come with experience,

look for some material that has a better temper,

you should probably avoid any material that has to be hammered or ground to thickness,

Try some .020" through .025" feeler gauge,
You can buy the footlong pieces from Precision, or Starrett, online each blade can be made to produce
multiple picks, they should cost around two bucks each and whatever profit is made on "shipping costs"
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

The idea of making your own picks was good
but the result not, so you should go with wiper blade inserts
or buy them from southord
if you still want to make your own and don't have any wiper blade inserts
i can supply you with some of them, just let me know ok
thanks.

Hey for a first go that ain't half bad! You got the general idea and that's what counts. Making an effective tool as stated before is also largely determined by the raw material, i think you got the general idea tough and that counts.

With some proper materials you'll be set for some good fun! What also works is feeler gauges :) They are easy to get and there's lots of material to work with, you can experiment and if you use the thinner once to make your final lockpicks and the ticker once to pratice you will have some really nice tools! Big plus is that the are already really smooth so sanding isn't required. I suggest using some Key files or a dremmel for the job.

Have fun!
