Search for MIT lockpicking guide

Postby Availor » 30 Oct 2003 16:31

Search for MIT lock picking guide, it should help you.

And forget about tools made out of paper clip... it's useless.

File down some fine tools out of instalator spring... the one you use ot clear your sink pipes... it's slim and made from springy steel.

Actually, Diablo777, the instructions on opening paper towels might come in useful. I've always had a problem with that and I'm terrified I'm going to electrocute myself when I return to my computer keyboard with wet hands.

using paper clips as picks

Postby macdan » 15 Dec 2003 5:20

I have used paper clips to pick wafer, pin tumbler, & lever locks. It takes patience and a light touch but it's possible.

I have also used spring wire to pick locks....wire used in the ornamental flower business also works well for certain locks.

As already mentioned, paperclips make lousy lock picking tools. The reason is the metal. If you notice, commercial picks and tension wrenches are made of stainless steel (very hard, somewhat flexible) or spring steel (hard, very flexible) while paperclips are made of soft, bendable iron. I have used paperclips to open simple wafer locks (like in desks and filing cabinets) but that is about all you can do with them.

Much better household items are large safety pins (bend 1/2 inch of the pointed end into a smooth 45 degree curve) and flat hair pins (you need to bend the end of these along the thin edge, which is difficult but doable).
