i recently bought a few padlocks to practice on, one of which was a master 140, no matter how hard i try, i just cant pick it, i have spent a hours on it and i am determined not to give up, can anyone give me any insight into what a m140 is like inside, what kind of pins does it have, or if you can pick one, what kind of pick do you use???
wonder is the beginning of wisdom

4 pins, at least 1 spool (usually in the 3rd chamber). Use a standard half hook and try to set the pins, chances are you will get a rotation of the plug that seems larger than normal, this is the false set of the spool. Lightly release tension until you can set the spool pin/pins.
Security pins increase difficulty, so remember to focus on your feel of the wrench, it will let you in on whats going on inside.

I usually use a c rake, takes me about 3 seconds to rake it open. Takes about 5 seconds to pick pin-by-pin with a standard half hook. Personally i find 140's to be particularly easy, but then again ive been picking for quite a long time

With the 140 I know when I started that I would pick the pins in order 1 then 2 and so on, but with the introduction of the security pins, and a better lock altoghether then the No. 3's and most of the other very cheap locks, you will near to learn to find the binding pin, pick it first, and go from there. In my 140 I always have to pick the second pin, then first pin, then third and while picking the fourth third looses tension, drops and it is picked last.
As far as the type of pick it is personal preference but I know I like the Falle principle.

Is there any chance you could post a few picks on picks that you prefer to use on the master series, 100+ mainly, and maybe your favourite "c" rake, Templates,
Dan
I have made mistakes, but never made the mistake of claiming i never made one!

You'll also find that the Master 140 is one of the most discussed locks on these forums... if you do a search you'll find out a lot more about it...
