What type of lock does the trouble key of a gun safe open?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

What type of lock does the trouble key of a gun safe open?

Postby ttro33 » 3 May 2011 22:03

I have a gun safe, I changed the password on the keypad and immediatly forgot it only to remember the two trouble keys that came with the safe were safely locked in the safe. I didn't like the thought of a thief finding the keys and having access to the safe. I filled out the manufacturers key request form and am waiting for the key but in the meantime I've been trying to see how secure it is since I always had an interest in picking since my teens.
I only want to know what kind of lock it is behind the keypad. The keys are like long skeletons keys that have warded key like protrusions on either side of the end of a hollow tube. Can't for the life of me find anything about this type of lock.

I'm very sorry: I don't think people are going to be able to answer your question here. (We reserve discussion of safes to the "Safes" forum; you'll need to apply for access to the Advanced forums).

This is especially true for something like an in-use gun safe. I'm sure your intentions are fine, and you're simply asking out of curiosity... but the unfortunate side is that, once people's answers are posted here, the answers would also be here for the next kid who Googles "how do I pick the lock on my Dad's gun safe?", which is obviously something that none of us want to see.

Just a follow-up thought: you may have already considered it, but safe deposit boxes are fairly cheap at most banks, and they're a great place for things like those keys.

The key came in the mail today, kinda wished they would have made it signature confirmation, cause anyone that recognized what safe co. was on the package could have swiped the package. I don't think merely stating what kind of lock these are would do any harm. Some gun safes use a mere tubular lock, I think there is a line somewhere, that discussing a type of lock doesn't cross, whereas discussing techniques to bypass one would. I know better safe than sorry, I do admit I wouldn't want some poor guy to have his most prized possessions stolen because of something I publicly talked about.

...or some of his most loved family members shot. (Just saying.)

Your point, though, is a valid one, and I do agree: many gun cabinet locks are pretty poor. However, trigger locks are also often pretty simple locks, and we discourage any discussion of them in the open forums as well, for the same reason. However, all that aside... welcome to the forum! You'll find a lot of lot of interesting, helpful folks here... and only a small number of rules: I'm sorry that your first question bumped into one. Please stick around! :)
