Pick gun E500XT

I was sitting home the other night and got curios about pick guns. I ordered the E500XT SouthOrd. I searched the forum and it’s not very much written about it. Anyone who has tried it? (I couldn’t resist ordering the SouthOrd Pen Pick Set at the same time…it's an expensive hobby…)

I have fiddled around with one of these (don't own one) and they are well build and very efficient. I'm sure you'll be glad with your purchase as you will be with most if not all SouthOrd tools ;) It's not very common people own a tool such as this, this is probably the reason your not finding to much info on it.

snappers work as well and don't require batteries, practice with a snapper and you will learn that its all about putting the probe in just as far as the last pin and angling the probe to use the angle of the particular keyway as it is shaped just beneath the pins resting on the bottom of their chambers,

that last tip is very important, it does no good to repeatedly smash the probe into warding that blocks the strike from hitting all pins simultaneously.

snappers are hand made and wiper stiffener is good material to make them out of, also stainless bike spokes.

snappers allow you to judge the effectiveness of a single strike.

the power tools can be set to such a high frequency of hits that the pins just float on top of the spanking and never are allowed to reach bottom for those long pins to shear. This may open locks with plenty of short pins, but will not work for long pins.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

In the US most hobby shops sell "music wire" in 3' lengths. This is a quality spring steel that will make very good snappers.

I've only tried snappers made of coat hangers that you get from the dry cleaner's. I'll try the music wire (which is "pianotråd" for us swedish lock pickers)!

Now I’ve received the pick gun and the Pen Pick Set.

I’ve only had time to try the pick gun a for few lock picking sessions. It’s awesome – although I’ve a lot of training to do. It’s still much easier to SPP a lock for me. But it’s a sweet feeling to just insert the lock pick gun and – if I do it right – just push the button a few times and – CLICK! It’s addictive (and noisy)!

The Pen Pick Set is (of course!) not as good as standard picks, but surprisingly good!

Did you find you had to file the coat hanger down a bit to fit in the key way? I sacrificed a coat hanger to make a ward-pick, but wasn't able to modify coat hanger wire enough to suffice as a decent snap tool.

Well not actually file it down, rather flatten the tip with a hammer (and then sandpaper it). Check this guide:

Are you picking warded locks with a snapper?

Great write-up on the cloths hanger snap gun. Looks like I've got a new project tonight.

to clarify, i wasn't using a snap-gun for the warded lock. I had picked up a MasterLock padlock with a warded mechanism from Walgreens, having seen it and been somewhat unsure of what it was about. After looking at the key, i modified the second key to be a bit smaller, for use as a "master key". I then tried to fab up something I could use to open similar warded locks using a cloths hanger. See the pics below.

^ The warded master lock is the grey master lock on the right-hand side. The cloths hanger pick below it.

^The pick itself.

^The original key and the master-key.

Side note: this lock was so effortless to open you might as well just use a zip-tie. I'm really not sure why anyone would use these.
