Replacing keypad for Schlage FE-595 Flexlock

Postby eurolock fan » 25 Jun 2011 23:58

I got asked this on another forum as its well known I like locks and opening them. If anyone knows the answer or where else I can ask it would be much appreciated. :)

I was wondering if you knew where I could get instructions on how to replace a keypad on a Schlage FE-595 Flexlock? The company sent me a replacement keypad since the numbers on it have worn down where everybody was using the same code, but they would not tell me how to replace it because they want me to take it to a locksmith.

I figure the job can't be that hard, and probably easier than working on a computer, electronic device, or car, but I'd like to see what I'm getting into before I start taking the $150 lock apart.

If whoever is asking that question can not figure out how to replace the keypad unit with the one they were sent by reading the lock installation instructions and looking at the exterior lock piece, then they should call the locksmith...

I'm the person from the other forum that looking to find out how to replace the keypad. I am not trying to switch the exterior half of the lock -- just the actual rubber keypad itself. By that, I mean the thin stamped sheet of rubber with numbers and the schlage button markings.

The reason I asked is to try to determine what changing the keypad involves before I break the factory sticker on the lock, and since I don't want to throw $150 down the drain. I regularly repair VingCard Punch Card locks (have no other choice), and kwikset type residential doorknob locks, but I've never opened anything as complicated (or expensive) as an electronic lock.

Ideally, I am looking for a blowup parts diagram or disassembly guide for the sealed exterior keypad and handle unit of the lock -- I'm assuming such a thing is available, since I don't see schlage not providing that to locksmiths or installers. I know from installing it that all of the mechanism and circuit boards, etc are in the outside unit, which is why I wanted to know how to correctly disassemble the lock.

In my searching the web, I've found the install guide that deception provided, as well as instructions to rekey the cylinder and reprogram codes -- but not the disassembly guide I am looking for.

Thanks,
npatel

@npatel:

Servicing that sort of repair is not something that the typical consumer would be doing -- that is why there are not instructions and/or exploded parts views for the exterior knob sub-assembly...

If the wearing off of the numbers from the rubber keypad buttons is an issue for you, then please by all means purchase a real push-button electronic stand alone lock set which has metal buttons... Alarm Lock makes a few different models which would be better suited to your application...

As to breaking the seal on the lock case: if it is that big a deal for you and you don't feel 100% that you can do it properly without seeing a parts view that isn't available to the general public, then have a locksmith effect the repair and see what sort of warranty they will offer you...

How long has this lock been installed ?
You realize that in that same amount of time from now you will be back in the same situation with a worn keypad on this lock again... As the lock is not designed for heavy use...

It sounds as if the lock selected and installed was not the right one for the pattern of and amount of use it is being subjected to...
