You can also use a micrometer to measure the key depths and spacings. Your depths are probably low from repeated duplication at incompetent locations. Measure each depth and round UP to the listed correct depth to compensate for wear and faulty duplication.

Schlage spacing is .231 from shoulder to first cut; and .156 from cut to cut. Depths are .335-0 and decrease .015 at each cut.

Also, a trick. Since you key will only work when pulled out, try getting the key to turn and while turned, tap it inward. Remove and look at the key. If there are impression marks on the up-ramps at each pin, file to remove the impression mark. This only works if the key is high enough to mark. If the key is too low it will not mark or work.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

[quote="misterjI'm trying the other one Monday...I think even I've actually figured out the cut depths for the key (by comparing it to other Schlage keys with known depths). I'm about 95% sure I have it correct.[/quote]
Maybe you should see if there are other locksmiths in your area.

Try here: http://www.clearstar.com/yellform.htm Thats Clearstar, you will find real locksmiths not a bunch of wannabes with a yellow page ad.
