Lockpicking problems

Postby Prestonm » 13 Jul 2011 9:28

Hi all! I'm new to lp101, but so far, it appears a great resource.

My question I have is when picking a shlage(sp), that's all I know about the lock, other than it has five pins, I rake a couple times, and move on to the remaining pins. Now, I lift each binding pin, and I can't feel that anymore are binding, but the lock won't open. Is this just something obvious I'm doing as a beginner?

My theory is that I might be pushing the pins to high, and the lower pins are getting jammed in the housing. But when I try to compensate for that, I get the same problem. Do any of you know what might be happening?

(just for clarity, I have permission to pick this lock. In fact, the door is open while I'm trying it. And the lock is in the door knob, if that helps at all)

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your over lifting the pins, from when you rake it.

Ah. I guessed right. What should I do to not over lift them? Lighter tension pressure? Or is it something with the pick? Thanks for getting back to me so promptly, by the way. :)

Lighter tension, try SPPing. Take it slow and try to feel each of the pins, you should be able to feel each of the pins lifting and setting.

Does the plug rotate slightly at all? If so, you might be dealing with security pins.

Old Proverb: Don't blame the tools, blame the skill and experience of the operator.

As a new picker, it will take some time to learn how to pick a lock. A lock in hand is typically easier than a lock mounted in a door, and Schlage knobs are typically a pain to pick even if you know what you're doing.

I'd recommend trying on a Brinks deadbolt or a Defiant deadbolt that you can get at Walmart and Homedepot for $12 each. This will allow you to hold the lock in your hand and the deadbolts are not as sloppy and loosey goosey as the Schlage knobs typically are.

As a rule of thumb, most new pickers put too much pressure on the wrench, and most over lift the pins as already stated above. Remember, the pins travel distance is a 1/4 inch at the most, usually 1/32 or 1/16 and anywhere in between.

If this is the first lock you're learning on, I will say that Schlage is typically not the first thing people start on, usually it's a Kwikset deadbolt, knob, or even more commonly a file cabinet wafer lock or a 4 pin Master No.3 padlock.

Watch some videos and animations of locks on youtube, the most important part of picking is fully understanding the interaction of the parts inside, what makes the lock actually open (when all the top pins have been pushed out of the plug by lifting the key pins) and being able to visualize the inner workings while your pick tools are inside probing around.

Hope this helps, welcome to the hobby!

Ok, I'll give that a shot and reply with the results.

I don't think it has security pins, it doesn't rotate or do any of the stuff I've heard security pins do. Thanks for your help!

Oh, I meant something with the pick as in am I doing something wrong in what I'm doing with my pick as opposed to the tension wrench. Sorry for being unclear. Plus, if there's a problem with the pick, it's a problem with me, because I made it. :P

Ah, so this lock is trickier? Hmm. I was considering getting a practice lock, that I can re-key and stuff. Is there any particular one that would be best for a beginner?

Thanks for your input! Every little bit of info helps.

Start with a Master padlock, or if you want something rekeyable, get a kwikset deadbolt, just don't get a kwikset Smartkey.

Ah! Picked it. I was over lifting and putting too much pressure on the wrench, as was mentioned above. Thanks for your help guys! I appreciate it!
