? about bump keys

Postby Hollywoodpick » 15 Jul 2011 21:58

I have watched a lot of videos on this and i ordered a large set of keys and the bumper.

I can not get any of them to work?

I have a set of 5 practice locks and i can not even bump open a 2 pin lock. I have tried all my door locks and shed lock and none of the keys will bump open anything.

? are some bump keys made wrong?

I have all my starter equipment in now and i have picked 2,3,4,5 and 6 pin practice locks quite easy but have not been able to pick my cheep house lock yet so i still have a ways to go on that.

I did buy the e-bay locksmith course and it is very good and got here super fast. Have my auto tools in to but have not tried them yet i still am working everyday.

Got in the AAA auto book and it is very complete up to date with photos and what tools to use and how - happy with that.

It would help if you explained what you were doing, so we could tell you if your doing it right or wrong.

I tried everything i can think of and what is in the many videos..

put the key in hold it like opening the lock with a little presher and bump it with the bump hammer.
Have done this many ways on many locks and it dose not work on any of them??
Have tried bumping the key in as well.
Have bumper lite hard up down in the center and nothing.??

What am i missing to get this to work.

Did more pratice lock picking today and did my website it rained all day here.
Thanks

Are you retracting the bump key one cut before you strike it? I'm assuming you have a pull-type bump key.

Both 5 and 6 and i have 3, and 4 pin locks to.

I have been playing with this a lot more today and i was able to open one 5 pin lock after many try's many times and a 4 pin also - But this took a long time i can almost pick it faster then bumping it 6 pin has not worked at all yet.

Seems like what worked is the key never fits in 100% of the way in any of the locks and i bump it with it sticking out a little if i push the key in all the way holding it in it never works that way.

But from what i have read this kind of key should go all the way in not stick out some like they are as they are minimal movement keys.
They stick out with a feel of the springs pushing the key out just a little.
Wacked my fingers a few times to.

I have a round lock that would go on a storage unit and i can not bump it at all plus i can not pick it at all have worked on it for a good 45 min and still can not get it open unless i use the key ..LOL.
looks like this lock.http://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/StoreHandler.ashx?media=4&id=3497

I never got into the bumping method so I am no expert with this. But you might contact the Supplier and talk to them about it. The set you purchased (in your link) are designed for the "minimal movement" method. I don't really know what that means as I only know that with the standard bump key, you push all the way in and then pull out one space, use slight turn force and then rap the key with the Bump hammer. Did they come with any instructions?

If you're applying too much turning force on the key while bumping, it can frsutrate your efforts. Have you tried varying the amount of tension you're using?

You will find that bumping works better if the lock is mounted solidly.

I always use a wooden skewer ( for cooking) as my turn tool,It just makes it easier to control the turn + tension. Saves thumbs being hit too.

get past the part where it is kinda hilarious and it actually shows db bumping a wafer lock with a banana as the striker after he does his business with the stem. good example of technique. i have no experience, so i can only show you the success of others. not sure if techniques or key design would be same for wafer and a pin/tumbler lock, so wait for someone else before copying his bump key design or do so only at your own risk :) good luck with the bumpage.
