Kwikset Smartkey

Postby pingable » 18 Jul 2011 14:28

I've was planning to replace a old entrance doorknob on out door.
We do have a alarm, with cellular radio, etc.

Abloy Deadbolt on the door as well.

We just tend to use the *entrance knob* when running out and then doing a quick arm of the system, as we just turn to *lock* on the way out.

I decided on the Kwikset smartkey for numerous reasons (knowing it's not high security) but I could rekey on the fly and it was a ~okay~ solution for me to use and have the same key on both the front and rear door.

In my research, I came across this blog....
Which I suppose could mean I'm better off avoiding the knob at all means.

Thoughts. Feedback. Advice.

I did not see a edit function but I'd throw this out there

Generally people go to a forum to make a complaint ....

So for all intents and purposes, there can be scores of these installs out there that work well, but I suppose by even the amount of responses to that thread, there are inherent issues in that lock system .....

The bulk of reviews usually come from two types of people: people who love it and people who hate it, and you'll never find a shortage of either.

My recommendation is normally that you go through the bad reviews and determine if any of the complaints apply to your situation. For example, are you going to use it under the same circumstances as some of the people who hated it? In this case though, yeah, it looks like it's hated enough that you might want to shop for something else.

One reply in particular stood out for me:
I’m a locksmith and I have been called out on a few SmartKey failures. I do not believe the lock resets itself. I have found that the tiny tab, on any one of the five pins that engage with the wafers, can be bent. This causes the pin to disengage with its associated wafer.
Warning: Torque applied to the key while it is still being inserted, can potentially cause this damaged and render the cylinder inoperable.
