Shot in the dark here, but I'm sure people will expand on it.


Traditional type lock cylinder, a scanner or a laser measures the key biting, then after a predetermined time delay (a few seconds maybe) the electronics of the lock would allow access.

The biting would have to remain stable for that time period, Picking, bumping or getting an impression would,allmost be impossible. I'm sure there would be ways to exploit this...

wet key
bent key
cracked key
superglue
graphite
oil

any one of these could potentialy lockout a keylock with an optical element
how many times have you gone to buy something and the bar code doesnt scan then your card wont swipe.Or have you ever tried to play a dirty or scratched cd. For a lock to be tollerent of these problems it would have to be simple and would end up being bypassed easily enough.

A lot of those 'problems' only exist because locks are mechanical. An optical (imaged) key would not be subject to wear and bitting could easily be incremental enough that dirt and water wouldn't be an issue in normal use.

The chief concerns I see are cost and power. The lock would require power to work and cost would likely exceed what was appropriate for many applications.

True but for a lock to go into production it has to have a market that doesnt exclude different enviromental conditions you only have to go to a bad part of town to see what some locks have to put up with.
one door i have to work on from time to time is used by the local junkies as a urinal and not just to take a leak vomit blood and other bodily fluids can be found on the door and ground.
