Creating a key from lever numbers

Postby Dan_inagap » 14 Sep 2011 2:53

Hi Everyone.

This is my first post, so let me introduce myself. I don't want to get anyone's spidey senses tingling :D

I have been picking locks for just over a year and I am frequently on this forum for information. Usually I can find what i'm looking for with a search or 2 but I can't finding anything on what I am looking for now.

I have a number of old crappy lever locks that I have been picking lately with great success. I made a decent 2-in-1 pick with some copper and brass and it works great, I also use an overlifter that I made out of spring steel wire from a hobby shop.

2 of the crappy locks I have been picking do not have keys, one is an old 4 lever lock and one is a "Solid" 2 lever lock.

While learning and messing around with my 2 lever lock i noticed numbers on the levers when I opened it up. Is it possible for me to buy a key based on the numbers on the levers?

Any help will be appreciated, or if someone recalls a previous post on the topic a link would help.

Cheers
Dan

Yes and no - a locksmith, knowing the make of lock and the lever number(s), could cut a key that 'might' work - depending on the condition of the lock and whether the levers are worn. On the other hand, if you just take the lock into a locksmith shop, they'll easily be able to cut a key for the lock. Or you could buy a suitable blank and learn about impressioning if you do not already know about it.

Cheers...

A 2 lever lock prob doesnt have many key combos and you can usually just order a cast to cut key if you know the make of the lock.
Same with warded rim locks

Thank you for the speedy replies.

I don't know why i didn't think of impressioning in the first place. I guess as a novice I only thought of that as being a cylinder lock technique as opposed to applying it to any lock.

I will go with the impressioning

I was picking a 2 lever lock today in an undisclosed location, but i couldn't lock the door after gaining access, I decided to remove the lock and open it up to see why i couldn't lock it again. I found that 3 keys had been broken off inside the lock! I don't know how but I decided to clean up the lock for them and now I can go get a key since I have several heads from the lock :D

Thanks again everyone
my skills are constantly improving and this forum is a great ethical resource to learn from.

Heck, did you pick a lock in use, that don't belongs to you?
Please stop doing this, it can lead to many, many problems... and bring to lockpicking a bad image.

What femurat said..but also, it is often, even usually, far more difficult to 'lock' a lever lock using picks than it is to unlock it.

Not to worry guys, it was a lock of a family members company building. I shouldn't have put undisclosed location, my bad :?

I wouldn't risk getting a criminal record to pick a lock to a secure room, it goes against my ethics anyway. If someone locks a door its for a good reason.

I bought myself some blanks and I have now started to practice impressioning.
