So I lost the key to my vstar 650. I've been looking around and seems the best option for me is a lock smith. I've had 2 shops tell me different things though. I was able to get the helmet lock off, and one shop told me to bring it in and they would make a key. The other shop told me that a key made off the helmet lock wouldn't have as many cuts, and wouldn't work for the ignition. does anyone know which if i will be able to get a working key off the helmet lock?

the other shop is right, ignition has more cuts. They could come out and decode it for your or impresion it. Gonna cost a locksmith visit.. $50-$100 dollars.

Is there a key code # on the helmet lock? There should be a # on one of the locks, backside or somewhere else not visable to prying eyes. By the code # a key can be cut.
Been playing with locks since '68.

Ran into this today on a Kawasaki but the guy brought in the gas cap because the dealer told him all the wafers are in that lock. I told the customer they weren't but he insisted I make the key because the Kawasaki dealer probably knew more than I did (he implied it). So I made a key to the gas cap, all three wafers and sent him on his way knowing the ignition on that year has 6 wafers. I will likely see him on Monday and charge him a second time.

It's surprising the dealer could not originate a key for him.. or they said $75 and he said, I'll go to a local locksmith and pay $5. Unless motorcycles are different where a VIN cannot get you a key from the dealer? Thanks Squelchtone

If it was a newer bike they probably could have done so. If you guys only charge $5 you are cheating yourselves. We get a minimum of $25 in the shop if they leave the lock with us and we can get to it when we have some spare time. Usually impressioning takes 5 to 10 minutes at most, but $5 isn't worth taking the file out. Some of the blanks cost so much we charge $5 for a duplicate.
