BEST Padlock, Picked but Won't Open

Postby 0oArabo0 » 18 Sep 2011 1:23

My friend gave me a BEST padlock that he didn't need anymore. I've been trying to pick it for a while now and I finally got it, but for some reason the lock won't open (so I guess I didn't really get it). The lock will rotate freely in the hull until about 90 degrees and just stop. Why can't I get it to open?

Did you pick it clockwise or counter clockwise?

Nevermind, I just opened the Master padlock clockwise too, so it opens both ways. Still can't open the BEST padlock clockwise to save my life.

Only cheap padlocks like the Master No.3 open both ways. Most padlocks on earth open like a car ignition starts, clockwise.

Oh, alright. Any tips for opening this lock? I counted 7 pins, but I wouldn't be able to open it if the building was on fire, and it was the only thing keeping me from safety.

And thanks, Squelch. I didn't know that. I'm new to lock picking.

Very light tension, and try a half diamond or an S rake. insert all the way, apply light tension, pull pick out quickly. repeat until lock opens or stops at the 1 oclock control position, where you can remove the core from the lock body.

Matt Blaze's paper has lots of good info as well: http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/sfic/

That's an awesome link, thanks. But even with light tension and raking it a million times, it still won't open. I'm probably just going to give up on this one and go buy another lock. I can pick all my other locks in under ten seconds. I might come back to this one after I have a few months experience under my belt.

@0oArabo0:

You just need to practice more man...

Best SFIC locks are machined to very very high tolerances...

A difference of 0.025" in one pin chamber will keep these cores locked...

Practice Practice Practice...

Squelchtone, You´re telling a new user to rip-rake a 7-pin Best SFIC?
I´ve got one of those with both keys and I "wouldn't be able to open it (without a key) if the building was on fire, and it was the only thing keeping me from safety".
LOL, either I´m a slow learner or these Best locks don´t pick very easily. I haven´t tried that pullback method many times tho...
OP, you should get some easier practice locks. This will only frustrate you.
Happy Picking!!

Haha, I figured. I gave up on it. I also hate raking and want to learn to SPP everything. Thanks lol
