Lock design idea

Postby landeroth » 9 Oct 2011 22:47

two words: disguised wafer. and i'm probably stealing an idea someone already had. Ok, at the end of the plug, it has a "<" shaped indention on the inside. so, what if you made that indention into a wafer that would go up when a key of the proper length was inserted? the weight and spring tension would complicate picking even if it was discovered. and i realize i am discussing close to a 1/4 inch wide wafer, but who woulda thunk it? i mean, most of the parts inside a lock are small, but this could also lead to complications for the key, for example: if it isn't inserted fully it won't operate, possible malfunction (although if carefully manufactured, would just negate its presence it it was stuck in the set position). One design note: would need to have the bottom of the < at the base of the keyway BEFORE it was set, not after, in order to complicate detection (that way you don't have a hole at the bottom of the plug, giving away its presence).

attempt at drawing normal plug...

the new plug design from the side.

new plug design from the back, the blue squigglies are springs for the wafer, two to make it have more force, due to the weight of the brass.

how it would look (in theory) with the proper key. a bump resistant pin would be my pin of choice for pin slot four (far left in pics), as this design would be easily defeated by a bump key with out it. and a shroomie in slot 3 just for fun :)
blame mac for this, he wanted pictures.

Kind of reminds me of the Schlage Everest. Thanks for the diagram, much easier to picture what you mean.

so its kinda like a check pin. i think in the back of the cylinder would be a better place than where the everest is.
