Schlage dead bolt lock

Postby blight » 26 Sep 2004 14:19

I've got a dead bolt ive been working on, thing is all i can do is lock it. Once i get all the pins set it turns to the left about 90*. I dont know why i cant un-lock it, ive had no problems with regular locks on houses but the dead bolt i was just messing with is a pain. I can also open padlocks in less than 30secs buts that probably beucase i know them well. any help is aprecitaed.

Perhaps you are turning it the wrong way to unlock? Also, keep in mind that if the door frame has "settled" there may be significant pressure on the bolt. Try a small screw driver to turn the plug, lest you break a tension wrench.

Schlages turn clockwise to unlock.

Except when they are mounted upside down, ala weekend warrior style.

Well, assuming it is a right hand bevel door, it would unlock clockwise no matter which direction (up or down it was mounted).
As far as I have seen, all the knows unlock clockwise, and the deadbolts unlock towards the hinges (most doors you will run into will be right hand bevel)

if you have picked it the wrong way then you can dissassemble it and make a key (if that's your goal) or use the key to figure out which way to turn it
if it is installed then you should change your tention after the cylinder begins to turn
it was only a small fire
