Strange Days (1995)

VERY realistic use of wrench and rake, AND they even turn lock in correct direction and after picks are removed and before door is pushed open, they show the plug turned to open position before the masked stalker with latex gloves enters the guys apartment to video tape him sleeping.

Same guy picks a hotel room door as well a few scenes earlier but it looks like he turns plug in the wrong direction on that lock. also shows wrench and pick being used =)

Sons of Anarchy Season 4 Episode 6, Unser uses a pick gun to open a door and file cabinet. I don't know much about pick guns, but I think a tension wrench is still needed, and I didn't see one used in the episode.

If anyone can pick a 9-pin with security pins in 60 seconds they deserve a medal.

I immediately thought of Dexter when I read this. I think that some movies are accurate but most just rely on the ignorance of the audience.

There was an episode of Nikita last season where she broke into some bureaucrat's home. They show her getting out a pick gun, do a really close up zoom on an ASSA Twin mortise cylinder, then ONE!!! click w/ no tension wrench and she opens the door. I just about fell out of my seat laughing.

The character in this clip fails to use a tension wrench with their home-made rake. But as they're a penguin I guess that's okay

Being a huge fan of ‘Dexter’ and also enjoying video games, I was naturally excited when they decided to release a game based on the popular T.V. show.

As I had hoped, there is an element of lock picking in the game, lock picking, but not as we know it….

To ‘pick’ a lock in the game, you have to navigate a half diamond (at least it wasn’t a broken key extractor or a bobby pin) through gaps in a series of moving pin stacks. The stacks move at various speeds and if you hit one of the pins, your pick is ejected from the lock and you have to start again from the beginning.

Here is a video walkthrough of the game taken from YouTube, the picking in question starts at 12:25. Worth a watch if you fancy a laugh!

I remember in Watch Men Rorschach has a set, he opens a file cabinet in just a couple seconds but he does use a tension wrench.

Wrong Turn 4 has a scene where this mutant freak picks open a Folger Adams Lever lock in 20 seconds, with a paper clip. My gf literally shouted at me to shut the hell up bcuz i called poppy _ so loudly. I've also seen too many "spies" pick locks with two snake rakes in 1 lock. I wish the directors of these flicks would google lock picking. Super Natural has some believable scenes.

This one isn't really about lock picking, but in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (USA version 2011) when the girl is doing research at the factory, the old secretary throws a set of keys on the table, one of the keys is a Kaba 20 dimple key!

It was nice to see something other than a Schlage key in a movie =)

In the new 9/11 movie "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" with Tom Hanks, a little boy has a key his father leaves him before he dies on 9/11 and the boy goes on a mission to find what lock it open, and he goes around New York City trying it in different locks. In the trailer they show the key entering a lock from a side/cut-a-way view, it shows the pins and springs moving. Again, nice to see locks in movies, even if it isn't exactly picking.

Not exactly in a "movie" but on tonight's episode of Person of Interest the guys were staking out an apartment building because "the machine" spit out the super's "number"...

What does this have to do with locks you might ask?

Well part of the action had Mr. Finch picking the deadbolt on the super's room to snoop while Mr. Reese was distracting him with a "broken" bathroom sink... Mr. Finch was nearly caught, narrowly escaping the super's shutting down the elevator...

Mr. Reese then makes a bump key for Mr. Finch and quickly explains how to use it to "open any door in the building" so Mr. Finch can quickly escape somewhere if he is being chased again...

After making my last post in this thread I went back and read through all 18 pages of previous postings...

I can't believe that no one as of yet mentioned the Keymaker from The Matrix Reloaded...



He pulled off some very awesome keymaking moves, like coughing up the key for the Dukati motorcycle during the escape scene and then making a key by hand with a file for the door to the portal to the corridor of "backdoors": "[in] this building there is a level where no elevator can go, and no stair can reach. This level is filled with doors. These doors lead to many places. Hidden places. But one door is special. One door leads to the source."

It is there where the Agents' Smith shoot the Keymaker and with his dying breath the Keymaker fulfills his function by giving Neo a key from a chain around his neck and says "You will know which door"...
