non-leather cases?

So, I know this is an unusual/weird question.

I've been using my friends lockpick set and I've gotten pretty good and feel like it's time to invest in my own set. I really don't want a pick set that comes in a leather case and I was curious if anyone can recommend a company that has good quality lockpicks but don't come with a leather case.

What kind of case would suite your liking? I don't know of any that do not come with a leather case. If you don't like the "snap over" cases, the fold up ones from Peterson have a little more room and don't feel as tight. HPC has nice zip up cases, but they are leather as well.

Any special reason you don't want/like leather?

I'm going to guess veganism, though I could be way off. Right now my personal set (which has grown to 14 picks and various wrenches) is in a nylon Garrity flashlight holster. Works great, but I want to do something about the top because if the picks weren't packed so tightly they could theoretically slip out if it gets upside down.

Yeah, I'm vegan. I don't care what sort of case it is as long as it's not leather. I thought of the flashlight holder but since I'm getting a beginner set, I think a flashlight holder will be too big.

buy picks individually, without a case, and commission someone you know to make you one to your specifications. One option to try is cordura, which is a very durable, tough fabric. Another idea is ripstop nylon. You want something durable, especially if you're going to carry them with you. Not to say you're wrong, and I do respect your position, but i've got to say that the cows are going to be killed anyway, and it's better to use every product of an animal than discard it, as that's just waste. It's like when I hunt deer. We harvest all the meat we can, and the hides are sent to a tannery and come back as a usable textile. I appreciate your conservationism.

I bought my picks individually. And made an unorthodox case from a wide sharpie marker. It wont hold a lot of picks. Especially ones with handles.

Nite Ize is a company that makes really cool pouches for EDC (Every Day Carry) like a flashlight, sharpie, and leatherman tool. I'm sure you could use one of their products to store picks as well.

I'd also recommend first putting the picks into a plastic tube such as the Peterson ones here: http://peterson-international.com/storage.html
then sliding that tube into the Nite-Ize flashlight holster or Leatherman holster.

Sparrows’ cases are not made of leather, but I'd also suggest buying individual picks (for example, from Petersons) and then making or getting made a case to your specifications and needs. There's a nice thread showing off various homemade cases and some very nice roll-ups.

I have a few cases, one of them including the Sparrows one. The case is decent for the price, but you are buying and receiving a $9 case. There is a reason why Peterson, HPC, and others charge $25+ for their cases. I bought 2 of them because it made sense with the shipping to the US. I have seen others make some modifications to the outside pockets which hold the picks in the case better when you are opening it.

I also went a different direction and bought a few pencil wraps. They fit most picks quite nicely and roll up to a pretty small form factor. This is the one I went with and the only complaint I have is the strap that holds it shut. You cannot tighten it so if it is not full of picks, it does not stay closed very well. I have since been using a shoelace to keep it closed. At first, the picks are tight to go in, but after a few times in and out it becomes a litle bit looser and fits better.

Storm is producing several sets in cases, their biggest set comes in leather, all the smaller ones don't.
As a beginner you probably wouldn't go for the biggest set anyhow.

The last couple of weeks I'm using a Sparrows Tuxedo pick case as EDC.
Not the best pics i've ever used, but not bad at all.
As a set it's brilliant; the case makes it brilliantly small.

For a competitive opening i would go for my own custom set or Storm's alfa-set. As EDC, it's the Tuxedo.
