I think a good understanding of how a warded lock works vs how a pin tumbler lock works is crucial.

Also, what tools are you using to "pick" your warded lock? A normal pickset won't get the job done (well) [edit: it is not the ideal tool to use, unless you want to beat up or bend your pick set).
