I use moneris. Its a flat monthly fee of 20 plus 2.5 per transaction. Uses any cell-phone. No other additional fees and works pretty nice. :) I like the idea of that squareup though since I do have an iphone. Will have to look into that.

So, if I have Squareup for my phone, and somebody comes to my work and wants say, 3 or 3 keys cut, that's not going to be much money, but these days it's amazing how many people don't carry any cash at all, not even a small amount, say they charge $7.50 is there any minimums?? How much is going to go into my pocket on a small sale like this? The CC machine at work dings us pretty hard if the amount is under $5.00 for some reason.

The smartest thing is to ask your question of Squareup. You really need a copy and must read the contract. If you don't understand a part of the contract ask and keep asking until you are satisfied.

I've been using Square for a few months because none of my friends carry cash and I have little use for cash.

No minimum for payments and the fee (2.75%) isn't too steep. The biggest advantage for me is that it works anywhere I have cell coverage. Now, if you don't have good cell coverage in your area then you're rather SOL for on-the-go payment processing.

It doesnt matter. There is no minimum with Square. If your company chooses to have a policy of minimum $10 or whatever that is your choice. The fees are always the same irrespective.

2.75% and no transaction fee for swiping through the reader. 3.0% +15c fee for typed in (non swiped) transactions.

This is super easy

GO TO
http://gopayment.com/

Sign up it is free.
they send you a device you plug into your smart phone or ipad or other tablet.
You pay your cell phone provider for the extra data plan if you do not all ready have it like $30 a month and you are all set and can take cc right away - cost much less then using a full cc system and no extra month to month fees except for the data plan with the cell phone people.

I am going to buy soon the MOTOROLA XOOM much better then the IPAD this will make things even more easy then using a cell phone and you can surf the net with a larger screen to look things up.
Play and watch you tube videos watch movies and a lot more. Like dl your windows files and things into it and access them anytime you need to something you can not do with the IPAD.

I too use Square for my mobile transactions (computer repair/virus removal). For a service that will send you a free dongle and take a minuscule cut I've got few complaints. It's nice that the customers get a receipt that shows the location (Google Map) the transaction took place and a photo of the person/me/work. I've used it at my garage sale as well and it had a good reception. Only drawback it that it seems to take them awhile at times to get the money to my account. As It's side work and I don't count on it it's not a problem, but if you're on the line it could bite you.

Use of smart phone apps to take credit cards is scary. I'm not familiar with the various apps but if it is not PA-DSS compliant you shouldn't use it.

I'm not worried about it personally - There are no PCI compliant apps that I'm aware of. The standard is a bit cavemanish, rather than forward thinking. PCI acceptance can take years, and this is new enough that it hasn't completed the process. I know that I've had no trouble, and that Visa has invested heavily in them. I've had good acceptance when I present my phone and dongle...

Suggest you should use the Square app on the iPhone. It's such a simple app and tool to use. The card reader plugs in to the iPhone an I believe an android and I only cost ten bucks. But they pay you the ten bucks back! I use it and it's the same as any mobile card reader. You can also customize the tax, tip, signature needed or not and your customer gets an electronic receipt send to them through the phone and or mail and the money is deposited the following night and or next day! Hope this helps out.

I am another square supporter!!! These merchant accounts can be murder. I had one for an auto body shop I owned and we were paying $100 a month just in fees. Remember, US banks now make over 80% of their income from fees. They are no longer in the banking/loan business, they're in the fee business. If you don't take credit cards next month, you don't pay any fees. Only downside to square is some of my old-timer customers really want that paper receipt for their credit card transaction. A text message to their phone or email isn't gonna cut it.

Warning on paypal......read the contract. If someone complains to paypal and paypal deems your business to not be ethical (they always take the customer side without question), they can shut down your account. By contract they have up to 180 days!!!!! (6 months) to return any funds to you that were in your paypal account.

If you check out the website paypalsucks.com you find tons of horror stories that will make your jaw drop.

Do your research....That's the moral of my story

I realize this is an old thread but I thought it should still be brought up for those still on the fence on which CC mobile option to go with.

This. If you do the math the turnover point for the slightly higher per-use fees with Square is around $2400, not including the mobile card reader you'll likely have to buy. So if you're doing less than that a month it's absolutely the way to go.

It might still be worth it, even if you do more than that per month, just for the convenience. A lot of merchants in my area have started using this and it's really easy to use. From the customer's perspective, it comes across as very slick and professional.

Also, the card reader is free.

I wonder if the Squareup is anything like the dialup machine that my friend replaced in favor of a more modern CC reader, principal wise, not mechanics. I know the headphone jack now allows for metadata, but the device is... interesting, (and this post is starting to go off topic, sorry)
If it works, it ain't wrong! -GWiens2001
