Best Lock & Core, Peaks?

Best Lock & Core, Peaks?

Postby BLooDBaTH » 28 Nov 2011 9:43

First I want to state that I know a bit more than the basics of locks at this point, but I am still a "noob" to many of the advanced wizwazzles here.

Right now I am at this point sitting with a lock in my vice, and I am not sure exactly what approach to take to pick it, I have tried everything from spping, to raking, to wedging something in the bottom of the keyway where the peak would be and repeating the other attempts. I have spp'd a few Bests and raked some of those following the spp, just to get a feel for them, they all had to have PB Blaster administered before they would work function, not sure if that had to do with anything. So here are the specs, from what I can see;

Best body - long shackle
Best Core(Core extends past the lock body like a Peaks)
It feels like it has 8 pins(do they even make 8 pin cores?)
Lastly the front pin is short(first pin in the keyway) but seems to operate normally, and by short, I mean slightly shorter than half the length of the other pins.

I read that Best purchased some of the Peaks keyways, I am wondering exactly how required the peak is on Peaks keys are, and if this lock may require something special to pop. I have not spent more time on any lock in my collection except my Abloy(getting close in time though), and I still didn't get that one yet. The executive keyway is a pita, no way to move the tools. Back to the fun at hand, I have been all over, except the locked forums here due to lack of access. Does anyone have any information that maybe useful?

You can tell it is a Peaks mechanism if the top of the keyway is a circle.

here's our friend wizwazzle picking one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3awPADdPxk

Hope that helps,

Very good call, that is something I noticed and forgot to mention. There is indeed a circle at the top of the keyway. Thank you kindly :D Any idea as far as the short pin, or needing to make a tool for the peak? I am not familiar with these specifics.

I did not see anything in the rules about double posting, and I forgot to mention this, I actually had wiz's 7 pin kaba page open in the tab prior to this one. I rather enjoy watching that man work.

looks from other posts that you have to push it up first before any of the deeper pins will even bind or set.

remind me to buy one of these, I've always wanted to play with one.

Thanks for the reminder =) ebay is fresh out.. btw, in Wazzle's video, it looks like he uses a slim line short hook to push up that special pin LAST, just before he finishes picking it open.

Ok, I see it, when I try to do that with mine the entire lock resets, is it supposed to sheer, or go above the sheer line?

I believe it does something to the control sleeve. Maybe someone else will come along today or later this week and give you better insight.

Good luck with it, have fun picking!

I think what you're talking about is a KABA Peaks IC core (I just posted one of these in the "what did you pick today thread"). In my encounters with them I've found that pushing that 'security pin' up first gives the cylinder a slight give either one way or the other that generally makes the cylinder easier to pick. I haven't honestly tried picking it first then lifting the security pin because I've always had success with lifting it first. I think I might have to mosey downstairs and try doing it in reverse.

On a side note, I've run into a TON of these cylinders with cracked housings because that security pin wears the inside groove and causes the entire core to literally crack in half. Just something to beware of if you're looking to buy these or use them in your business.
