Keys

Postby Sbrad701 » 28 Nov 2011 18:43

I am very new to this wonderful hobby/career. I came across a question that has me a little confused. Is a code key the same as a depth key? I've seen the term depth key but I am unsure if this is the same. Thanks.

@Sbrad701:

A "code key" is one that is originated by means of a code cutting machine to original manufacturers specifications...
A "code key" is also known as an original key/first generation key...

A set of "depth keys" can be used with a tracer key duplicator machine to produce a second generation copy of a "code key" created by using various keys within the set to create a second generation copy of a "new" key bitting to re-key locks or produce a second generation copy of a known key bitting in use which is physically unavailable to copy on the machine for whatever the reason...

The DEEPEST cut key in a set of depth keys is a bump key for that manufacturer/keyway...

code key
n. a key cut to a specific code rather than duplicated from a pattern key. it may or may not conform to the lock manufacturer's specifications

code original key
n. a code key which conforms to the lock manufacturer's specifications

depth key set
n. a set of keys used to make a code original key on a key duplicating machine to a lock manufacturer's given set of key bitting specifications. Each key is cut with the correct spacing to one depth only in all bitting positions, with one key for each depth.
