I have a older American lock series 3570 With an old stock arrow core I am new to lock picking and i love it i have so far pick this lock 4 times but every time i always pick the operating line. What should i do i only have an operating key and no control :? If any one has any ideas on how i could remove the core with out damage ? Could you please help me out Thanks! :D

3500 series american padlocks are pretty good locks there is not any practcial way to remove the core without a control key or picking to the control shere line.
Use the search feature above and look for SFIC ( small format Interchangable core), you will find lots of information related to your question.

You could try making (or buying) the special wrench which will apply torque to the correct sleeve inside the lock ;-)

Keysman -
I found some good information but i know theirs two Shear lines and i keep hitting the wrong one. And there at least 3 spool pins/serrated pins and its a hard pick but i enjoy the challenge :D but is there away i can feel for the control line ? are the keys usually cut higher or lower ? sorry if im asking questions that just sound dumb.
Thanks for your help (:

tip: check with a flashlight first to see if your lock has those holes in the sleeve before you spend time making the custom wrench. for spacing of those fingers in the wrench, it will help to have a BEST or Arrow or Falcon key handy, the center of the valleys is the place to measure from valley to valley.

or you could just follow this diagram I found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=49785

Good luck with picking it, please post pics of your wrench, we always appreciate home made tools. =)

The wrench mentioned above will specifically tension the control sleeve.
You mentioned above that there are spool/ serrated pins ? That is pretty unusual in an older core, the newer Flexcore by arrow has spool/ serrated pins.
The control key can be any combination there are few rules.

what I would do to fit one of those tensors,
look on the bottom of the cylinder for the little holes, this will give you the proper spacing and size of holes,
you could use a needle file to cut the space between the holes, constantly checking the spacing,

do not try to cut the full depth of the comb, do not try to cut the full with of the interstices on the comb,

Just postion a small cut in the place where the interstice is to be cut, and do this for all the interstices until you have the beginnings of the cuts positioned, then you can go more in detail and widen the cuts, leaving the tine in its full width dimension.

this allows you to start and work on spacing and tine width in finer focus,

you are not going to successfully chop out a comb with files, by going full depth on the first tine and interstice. by the time you have six of them cut, you will be badly off spacing,

but by starting small on all the cuts, you can lay it out so that when you work it into shape you widen either the right or left side of the cut so that the tine will be full width and the cut, is worked out wider to open its space,
there will be a lot of minor tweaks that will bring all 6 tines into position. you will look fit and then make a cut then look and fit again, this way you shift the emphasis of the cut to the left or right side of each cut to make it fit as you go.

the tines are not deep so any mistakes made on the first cuts can be removed by cutting the whole edge of the metal comb to flat with a wide flat file.

Work slow, keep looking and checking spacing and tine width against the holes on the bottom of the cylinder.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

What pick style and brand are you using? if you JUST want the thing open, use a half diamond or an S rake and insert pick all the way, lift up a little and quickly pull it out of the lock, keep doing this with light to medium tension until lock turns to control position.

upload pics to tinypic.com and then paste the http:// links here.

If this lock is gummed up and dirty, spray something in there first, that may be what is stopping you from picking it. I don't usually recommend it, but since it is a common item, if you have some WD40, spray it in there, or any Silicone spray you have.

Ouch, the person who made that key should be slapped. I always debur my keys, it makes them operate much easier when you remove all that excess metal =) If you have a bench grinder with a wire wheel, you can clean that key up very easily.

Keep trying to pick that lock, you're almost there!
