How do I make a rake?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

How do I make a rake?

Postby Daggers » 11 Dec 2011 8:17

I tried making an L rake and it was a failure. I used the dremel and i was not able to get the contours of it right. How should i go about using a dremel to cut one out? i am using metal from windshield wipers. And also, for the handles on my picks, they are 4" and the part of the pick that goes into the lock is 1 1/4". how long should my handles be? because i'm trying to fit them inside a pen and they are just slightly to long and I don't know what the minimum length for a handle should be and not be hard to use.

Please search the forum sticky's for how-to documents and templates.

If you go to the left menu and click Lockpicks-Manual start scrolling from the top and check out the sticky documents, here's an old thread with templates and pick shapes, some links no longer work but some do.

Print this and compare the ruler scale at the bottom to your ruler in millimeters until they match, then you'll know how big a real pick is, based on this image:

Easiest way to get nice circular humps for an L rake is to use a diamond burr. They usually come in a pack of different sizes and shapes, and aren't too expensive. They'll fit into the standard sized chuck supplied with your dremel. :)

See my pick-making tutorial. I have made several L-rakes, and they've all come out great, using just a Dremel, needle files and sandpaper.
