Question on picking

Postby HeavyHanded » 17 Dec 2011 23:31

So when you guys pick, do you lever the pick off the bottom of the keyway, or press the whole pick up while keeping it level? Or are both of these effective techniques depending on circumstance.

Just want to make sure I'm doing it right, seeing as how I'm using something similar to a real pick for the first time. Whole new experience!

Thanks!

What ever opens the lock is the best technigue. I like to lever a hook or deforest if possible, sometimes its not. When levering a pick you must be extra careful not to use too much force. And be sure to lever on a pin, so the picktip is not on a warding in the lock.
I do find it harder to lever my pick if the keyway is "Euro" style, pins on the bottom. But thats just me.
Keep picking the way you find most confortable, try other ways of picking, and you´ll develope your own style.

I've wondered about the same thing. It seems that a lot of the very skilled pickers on youtube seem to lever the pick off their middle finger a bit...hard to explain, but it seems really widespread. Not sure how well I explained that, but I'm sure some here will know what i'm talking about.
