Lori L10 Breakdown

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Lori L10 Breakdown

Postby wa1ker00 » 22 Dec 2011 10:16

With the students out of town, it's been slow in the shop and I decided to take apart and photo one of the more peculiar cylinders I have lying around my desk, a Lori L10 keyway mortise cylinder. If this belongs in the 'advanced section' since it is a restricted keyway, oops and sorry.

Image

Standard sized mortise cylinder with a fairly easy to navigate keyway, but as you can see has a few dimples on the keys.
Image

Image

Those dimples control these 3 sleeves on the plug. They are not spring loaded or anything, just held in place by a thick lubricant/grease.

Image

When picking this lock your tools will usually bump the small tips of these sleeves that protrude into the keyway, causing them to press outward. When you do finally get the lock picked, they protrude out and actually wedge themselves into the top pin chambers, effectively locking the cylinder at a 11 or 2 oclock position.

Image

This can usually be remedied by putting pretty heavy tension on the plug and using the back side of a half diamond pick to push the tips of the sleeves back down, letting the cylinder rotate.

Image

All in all, not a bad lock but not nearly as 'high security' as it looks at first glance.

I'm pretty sure that's not considered advance.

Pretty cool although I was expecting it to be a bit higher security. Thanks for sharing!

Given the restriction level of ordering keys/cylinders I expected more as well.

Looks like a wafer lock. What an odd beast!

Cool lock!!!

Do they make these LORI L10s in SFIC version?

OP: Are some of your customers college student lock hobbyists?

Thanks

AFAIK Lori are no longer made. I knew the company that were producing the product for ILCO, but i thought that ILCO discontinued the Lori product line.

I think you're right. The bow of that key screams PEAKS, didn't Lori invent Peaks and then sold it to KABA/Ilco who then sold it to BEST?

Too bad giants like Eagle and Lori are no longer in business. I think the only company still making locks is in the state of Connecticut is Sargent.

If anyone knows any details of Lori's company history, I'm sure many of us would like to hear about it.
