Making spool pins

Postby Daggers » 2 Jan 2012 13:03

I have a kiwkset lock with all normal pins. I was wondering if i cut the top pins into spool pins, would that work? since spool pins are the same thing just with the middle of the pins thinner, if i do that to the pins if it will be the same.

@Daggers:

That would be just fine, the commercial Kwikset pinning kit comes with spooled top pins for use in the locks...

Just don't replace all of the drivers with spool pins, or you'll have trouble pulling the key out: you should leave at least one standard (non-spooled) driver.

I just had a thought... spooled lower pins with a sortof sidebar thing that pushes into the grooved part as you tension creating another kind of sheer line >_<

Would that be the equivalent of combining spooled bottom pins like American padlocks and serrated plugs/chambers like ASSA/Medeco? It could work but I imagine you'd run into a lot of issues with keys working smoothly, especially over wear and time.

No I mean like have grooved or serrated bottom pins with a sprung sidebar. But not sprung towards the pins, instead away from them so it only acts when the cylinder has rotated a couple of degrees.

So say we have set two stacks, the cylinder will have turned enough for the sidebar to now act on the remaining unset pins stopping you from lifting them.
