The automated portion of the testing for the "Grade" of the lock is done on machines...
Opening and closing the lock in a "door simulator", and the cycle counts on the knob/lever mechanism are done on special machines as a machine can use the exact same force every time, (and the actual conditions in a test being carried out by a machine can be measured more easily with instrumentation than wiring up a person with sensors) whereas a person can not and different people are stronger or weaker than others...
The UL-437 testing is done by real live people using real tools that are available to the public -- they are limited by what force they can create using manpower via hand tools as well as what sort of drills and mechanized devices are considered man portable...
