Help with a Schlage!

Postby irate-turtles » 3 Jan 2012 19:02

Howdy,

I'm relatively new to lockpicking, and I'm having some trouble with a 5 pin schlage that I recently picked up.

I have two schlage cylinders that I've been working on, one with four pins, and one with five. I can easily SPP the four pin cylinder, as well as easily feel the counter-rotation of the 3 security pins when I lift them.

However, when I move up to my five pin cylinder, I struggle to even get false sets on the security pins (which I identified after taking the lock apart) and I never feel any counter-rotation when lifting the spool pins. Basically, I easily set the 5th pin, which is a normal pin (And I believe is the first setting pin), and then I try to set the 4th pin, which is a high setting spool pin, but I don't get much feedback on the fourth pin setting, and after I think I set it, the 1-3 pins refuse to set on anything, even though they are spool pins. I'm wondering if I'm possibly oversetting the 4th pin, or not using quite enough tension after I set it? I'm using a featherlight torsion wrench.

I did successfully pick it once, but that was only after I got frustrated, and lifted the 3rd pin up after setting the 4th and 5th pins, and vigorously shook the lock, which happened to set the 1st and 2nd pins as well.

I have worked my way up from Defiant locks, which I started at 1 pin, and repinned back up to 5 pins, and then practiced with the defiant spool pins, and I also worked my way up from 1 pin with the schlage.

Any advice?

Thanks for the advice. I finally got it, and it came down to feathering the torsion wrench from heavy to light tension, because heavy tension was needed to set some of the pins, but I had to use light tension at times to make sure I didn't over set anything.
