Ultimate Challenge Practice Lock

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Ultimate Challenge Practice Lock

Postby NinjaLlama » 25 Jul 2011 19:06

I recently ordered this lock and so far it works quite well. It has six pin stacks and comes with an assortment of replacement pins, including spools.
Changing the pins is quick and easy as well. :)

Yes. :P

You can repin the lock into configurations you're never going to find in the real world or just leave a single pin in it if you're just starting out.

Just seen this online too. Anyone else with experience with it? Comments?

I don't have tons of money to spend on various locks so something that is easily configurable like this would be of huge interest to me if it was a quality way to learn to do some basic lock picking. I'm not a fan of the see through cutaways since it seems more of an easy way to cheat. Useful to pick once and then it's game over. This challenge lock set looks really configurable and something you could use over and over.

Thoughts?

Does the binding order always stay the same when you reconfigure the pins or is the different size of the pins enough to cause the order to change?

If every pin was exactly the same, down to microscopic levels, and all the holes were drilled to exactly the same width and placement all the pins would bind at the same time regardless of what order you put them in. But here in the real world....

Because no two pins are exactly the same binding order tends to change when you change the pins around.

Binding order can even be different with the same lock pinned the same. I assume it's because the pins aren't perfectly round either so binding order can even change as the pins rotate.

I have verified that with my challenge lock that changing pins will indeed change the binding order. I did not test it thoroughly, but with the original pins versus pins from the baggy the binding order did change.

Just got one of these in the mail today.
Great lock for practice. Pin it any way you want quickly.
Great way to increase you skill without having to buy a bunch of different locks. Highly recommended.

I just got one (from the contest) too. The included extra pins/springs/screws/spool pins/hex key are great. The only thing I was worried about, and confirmed by a large CAUTION warning in the instructions, is that the hard steel screws could very easily cut through the brass threads if you cross threaded the lock. Nothing to worry about if you're careful, and unavoidable when working with brass cylinders, but just something to be mindful of.

I see it contains spool pins, does it also contain mushroom or serrated pins?
