Locks to start with...

Postby Lpjs » 25 Jan 2012 22:24

I sincerely apologize, because I know this information is already here, but I can't seem to find it again;

I'm new to this (ordered an SO set of 14 picks and the visual guide to lockpicking 3rd Ed, but they haven't arrived yet).

Somewhere on these boards I read a list of specific locks that would be good to purchase for initial learning. I remember that there were a few different models of master lock on the list as well as some deadbolts. I think there was also a common style of desk-drawer lock...

Can anyone help with this information or point me in the direction of the post?

Sorry for the bother, and I appreciate any help anyone can offer,

JS

You can find six or eight good threads on that here. :wink:

Yes, I understand how google works. As I mentioned, I've been searching and I'm not finding the information I found before - a specific list of brands and models.

Thanks for being so helpful, though.

Seriously? I wasn't trying to be a jerk... the first two pages of that Google link are full of threads that recommend specific locks for starting out, from all over the world:

This topic comes up every couple of weeks... so I'm not sure which particular thread you were thinking of (or even what country you live in), so we're going to be a bit limited in offering a specific list of brands and models, beyond the usual Kwikset, Schlage and Master lock recommendations, plus a few helpful "training" locks that some people have found useful over the years.

I wouldn't be too worried about a particular list; most people start with some simple padlocks (e.g., any of the cheap silver-bodied Master Lock padlocks) and then work their way up to simple deadbolts or KIK (Key-in-Knob) locks (e.g., Kwikset, Defiant, Weiser). After that, people tend to move onto whatever higher-quality locks are available cheaply and nearby: Schlage deadbolts, American padlocks, etc..

Thank you.

I appreciate the response and the assistance. I ordered a Master Lock #3 and a cheap Kwikset single-cylinder deadbolt.

Really looking forward to everything arriving. Books and locks should come today, but it looks like the picks won't arrive until mid/late next week.
