Lat-17 Southord Pick Gun problems..

i feel like giving up.. its been 4 days or so since i've gotten it.. no luck whatsoever. I picked up a crappy 4-pin "magnum" lock, and i have not a clue, not matter how hard or soft i push the tension wrench, even lifting up the first pin won't stay up. It just bobs back down.

i tried it on an old masterlock (5) pins. my friend had it picked in 5 seconds.. 5.. he hadn't even seen it before.

He had put thte tension VERY high on the gun, and that seemed to work just fine.

he hands it to me, after about 5-10 seconds.. i didn't feel it working, then BAM.. turned 90 degrees and i popped the top off.

YA!! i got the door lock too! that one was harder, and my friend did it very fast, and did it over and over.. i coulnd't get it.. then after trying the bouncing method (and i pressed the tension wrench pretty hard) it went.. now i can do it in under 30 seconds everytime, averaging 10 seconds (unless i drop the tension wrench)

the whole key was the tension wheel on the gun, i always had it too low, and my friend just said, ah what the hell, wheeled the thing up really high, and BAM, opened it in a few seconds.

You should reset it lower everytime you get to a new lock, try it then wind it up a little aty a time, too much can damage some locks,

Donty do it on locks you rely on as if you damage it your in for the high jump, try your key now do you notice its a little gratey? if not youve got away with it but dont do this too often on the same lock and especially the one on your house.

ya, i've noticed. the first door actually after having opened it 20 times, i couldn't fit my key in all the way, had to push a bit to get it in.

so, the pick gun (picking in particular) tend to wear away locks quite fast? would graphite powder help?

Nothing helps, the guns wear locks simple as, repin often or dont practise for long, they are a locksmith tool not a hobby pick

ya, i found for $22 a set of 14 picks with handles (lockpickshop.com)

they look SWEEEEETT. is "The Locksmith" DVD worth it for beginners?

Yay! My co workers are awesome. A guy at work who knows I'm into locks brought me his old Southord LAT-17 pick gun. He's never had much luck with it, but wants to get back into picking as a good Winter time hobby.

So I guess sometimes it IS good to tell people around work that you like locks and picks. =)

You probably already know this but make sure you are not inserting it too far in to the lock.
