I spent some time researching this question ... Schlage's own
marketing literature was of no help, and I wasn't able to find the
answer within any of the profession-oriented literature either. I
could just call a locksmith, but it's a Sunday morning and so
that's not the most viable option.
Do the BE and FE series keyless-entry locks (cylindrical locksets and
deadbolts, respectively) use the crappy F-series-style cylinders, or a
higher-quality standard Schlage cylinder?
Can these locks be retrofitted with 6-pin cylinders (specifically,
conventional Primus or Everest C or D KIK-type, or other
manufacturers' KIK cylinders, such as Medeco's)? (For clarification,
I doubt I'd ever retrofit any residential-grade lockset with a Medeco
cylinder ... I ask out of sheer idle curiosity).
The major appeal of Schlage's keyless-entry locks are that they don't
require any modification to the door (for through-bolting, wiring,
etc.) Of course there are options such as Simplex mechanical combo
locks and any number of electronic analogues, but most I've seen
require at least a little bit of door modification. This would be
used in a rental-unit situation, and so door modification wouldn't be
an option.
Thanks, kids!
