Can anyone identify this lock!?

Postby itsalockout » 1 Mar 2012 9:31

Hi there, long time reader, first time poster,
I have come across an old keepsake box that contains a strange lock that I can neither identify or pick (I've must've tried almost everything :P )

It looks and feels like pretty cheap lock to be honest but that clasp is sealing the box shut well.
The hinges on the back of the box state the maker as CHENEY ENGLAND
I've seen Cheney locks before but not this style.

I have a slightly similar styled lock on a metal briefcase containing a poker set, but that has an easier design to pick.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

C.W. Cheney & Son Ltd is one common brand of luggage locks from UK, you can find out some of their history here http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/ ... r/gazc.htm

Which kind of picks did you use with that lock? If you've used picks designed for pin-tumbler locks, it's no wonder you weren't able to play that much with it :)

Blurry closeup apart, I think that lock uses a bitted key and should be a lever lock, so it can't be picked by manipulating pins but rather you have to manipulate the levers to get the bolt slide past.

Cheers :D

Looks more like a simple warded mechanism with a sprung latch. A basic L wire should do the trick, just feel for something springy and push it till it pops open. Like using a key, only with some feeling around rather than a simple insert-and-turn motion. I doubt that thing has any more than one lever.
