pointer #1: don't pick locks that are in use or relied on by you or others. On that note, and since Google no longer uses this catch phrase, "Don't be evil" That's our number one thing in the hobby of lockpicking, we don't pick locks to get into places we have no business being, and we don't pick locks for mischief or to commit crimes. The knowledge is very powerful and comes with many responsibilities. Even though this is lockpicking101.com it is NOT breakingandentering101.com There is a big difference and we want everyone who visits to understand that.
pointer #2: Make post titles useful and searchable "newbie needs help picking Schlage door knob" for instance.
pointer #3. Practice. Lots of daily practice, and you will eventually become a good picker.
As far as your question, that's not really how picking works, you have to start by understanding how locks work in order to pick them, and that door knob maybe too hard even for a total beginner. I recommend a Master Lock No. 3 padlock, or a Kwikset deadbolt. Its also nice to have these on your coffee table or work bench, much easier than squatting in front of a door.
On youtube, look up Schuyler Towne and his 24 video set that teaches how locks work and how picking works. After that set of videos, you'll know a ton more stuff and that understanding will in turn make you a better picker down the road.
Do you have a pick set yet? This isn't the sort of skill you want to learn by using paper clips like they do in the movies.
Welcome and have fun poking around the forum,
