Masterlock 130D?

Postby Machaera » 30 Sep 2004 10:27

This is a fairly small 4 pin brass padlock. I oppened it once but am having trouble repeating the feat. The third pin from the front has by far the most tension and lifting it even a little bit and applying tension will produce a click. Looking at the key, however, it should be a fairly high pin. Additionally, the corresponding ridge on the pin is cut wierdly, with a "ledge" cut into the top of the pin like so: __/\

Is this a special pin?

Did you mean the ledge was on the KEY and not the pin in the lock?

Yeh with the first padlock i picked (first and only :( ) One of the pins seems to be extremely hard to press and makes a click when i push it. However sometimes its easy. Im not sure, but usually if a pin is to hard to press, i just release the tension and start over using lighter tension. And i usually can get it then. Unless you have tried that im sorry, i cant offer much more because im a beginner  . Come to think about it, i read your post again and im not even sure if i have the same problem, but im finding hard to interpret as its 2:30am now. If its the same, hope i can help. If its not, boy do i feel stupid.

The ridge you are seeing is a direct result of the way the key is made. Nothing too much special about it.

As a matter of fact, if you begin to compare it to other keys you will see several similarities.

It is most likely that you have a spool pin in that position. This would account for your immediate "click" even though the pins haven't reached the shear line.

If this were a mushroom pin on the other hand, the feeling would be less of a click, and more mushy.

Try reducing your tension, and work from there.

I picked up a 130 a few days ago and got it pin by pin my first try in a few minutes. I've 'mastered' the lock now and mine has no spool or other pins in it. it is brand new.

Do lock mfg's randomly put spool pins in different models or something?
