PowerBook Duo Dock lock

Postby APE » 25 Mar 2012 13:46

Howdy, lurker for a while first time poster.

A few months ago my neighbor gave me a PowerBook Duo Dock:

It's in great condition, seems to have some of the fancier amenities but with one problem: it is locked. With it locked I can't eject the PowerBook wedged inside and take care of the potential time bomb that is the battery. He found it inside a storage locker that he won the property rights to at auction. As far as I know he never found any keys.

This is what we are looking at:

I've done some lock bumping and have picked a few easier padlocks but I'm not willing to risk getting a bump key stuck and what I know of picking isn't cutting it quite yet. I am 100% unwilling to drill it out as this thing is in amazing shape. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction, looks like a cheapy tumbler lock designed to keep opportunistic thieves from swiping a PowerBook as it really isn't that difficult to toss the whole thing into your trunk.

Here are some things you can do :
Take the device to your local locksmith have the lock picked open and /or a key made.
Find someone with a similar device and see if their key will operate the lock.
Contact the manufacturer and have a key sent to you.
And of course : Try searching the site for "wafer lock"

Thank you, I'm familiar with a great deal of information in the FAQ but it will prove useful.

Apple can and does offer the ability to replace the key however they need to know a code written on the keys themselves or on the tag attached to the keyring. Since I have neither I'm left with picking it myself or, like you said, a locksmith. Not too keen on coughing up $100+ but if it comes down to it I will.

Stop by a real locksmith shop in your area, plead your case as a poor college grad student and ask if they could just open it for $25 bucks, they'll look at the lock, and may do it for free, its a simple lock. Not gonna run you a $100 unless they're coming over your house to do the job.

If someone came in our shop and wanted it open it would probably be no more than $5 for a few seconds of work. There is nothing to that lock.
