Lift Lid Chest Locks

Postby HML » 14 May 2012 12:00

Good evening all, I hope someone can help me with this.

Recently, on 2 separate occasions, I have been asked to open lift lid chests where the keys have been lost. Both customers want to access the contents of the chests but wish to use the chests afterward, ruling out drilling the locks out.

Both chests employ barrel key type locks and having never picked this type of lock before, I was looking for some guidance!! Naturally, I cannot tell you the lock manufacturer details as I only have the keyhole to go on....

Can anyone help?

File out a key. Bit keys of this type impression easy if you cannot manipulate them. You just have to find a key blank that you can use so take measurements. If the chest locks are the type that can lock without a key then they are dangerous and should be removed. Small children can get inside and the lid close and well you can imagine the rest.

If you do not have experience perhaps refer the job to a fellow locksmith who has the experience and go on the job with him/her and learn.
