Hello, New guy on the block. New to locks, forums, internet and typing. I am an old guy (Gramps) is what my grandkids call me. I am also an old Navy man. Which brings me to my question/problem. Back in the 50's I used a combination lock (Sargent & greenleaf) it has on the back of it US PADLOCK 8088. I kept the lock, the instruction paper and the change key. The main thing I did not keep or remember is what combination I used. The instructions read first to dial to unlock so I'm stopped there. Any way for someone to help me so I can use this lock again? Thanks,
After posting this on new guy list it was suggested that I ask as a question with a picture. Not sure how to do that but will try. Thanks, tried to attach the picture and got this, "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached" ????? Don't know what to do now??????

Hi again Gramps! Good to see you found your way here. I think the forum is having storage space issues with attachments so the best way to do it would be upload the picture to http://tinypic.com/ then link to it. Hope this helps!

Those locks were made well and made difficult to crack so that spies wouldn't get into our file cabinets too quickly, and if they did, the damage to the lock would make it obvious that someone pried it open to peek inside. In case your lock is still set to the factory combination of 25, start at 25, and turn the wheel all the way around 4 times counter clock wise, and end up on 25. now dial clockwise to 0 and sharply pull up on the shackle. If you never changed the combination it should still be the factory one. *I just read that the combination can also be 10-20-30 so try that as well, the dialing order is very important, so here's a photo of the original instruction sheet: If this doesn't work, there's no crafty or sneaky way to crack the lock. Best bet is getting another one on eBay for $10 bucks. Some current ebay auctions for 8088 padlocks: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=8088+padlock&_sacat=0Good luck, Squelchtone

Thanks for the replies guys. I do remember having to change the combo on the lock. I tried the 25 and the 10,20,30 just in case but no luck. I have the same instruction sheet and the key. I've tried remembering some of the favorite numbers I've used in the past but no luck. Looks like I might have to just put it with the rest of stuff I saved from back then and forget it. I would not be interested in buying another one. Just wanted to use this one again since I've carried it around for so long. Some times you wonder why you keep certain things.......got a lot of that. Thanks again, Gramps squelchtone wrote:Those locks were made well and made difficult to crack so that spies wouldn't get into our file cabinets too quickly, and if they did, the damage to the lock would make it obvious that someone pried it open to peek inside.
