Trouble picking a 141D

Postby ztune » 30 May 2012 16:52

Hello gentleman, I'm new here(first post!) and you are by far the best community for hobbyist lockpicking. I've read dozens of threads in the past few days, and I thought I'd throw out a problem and see if I can get some advice. I bought my first set of lockpicks(southord mpxs-11) to just mess around and picked a few small 3-pin and 4-pin pin-tumbler locks. I recently moved to master locks and pick no. 1's, 3's, and 5's easily. For the most part I can do these in a matter of 10-15 seconds just going back to front, and then front to back.

I adopted an old master lock m1 magnum that I'm working on, but has sticking pins from dirt/grime/weathering. In the meantime I bought a brand new master lock 141D, with the intent on learning to pick something slightly harder. Looking at the key, pins 2 and 3 are deep cut, while pins and 1 and 4 are very shallow. Pin 4 wants to set first, but I can't set it without oversetting pin 3. Is it a pick selection issue? I've tried using two different picks, a small hook and small diamond, without much success. There just doesn't seem to be enough room to do it with what I've got.

Any suggestions?

As has been recommended to me on occasion you might want to try top of keyway tension it will give you a lot more room to manuever he pick. Have fun and keep at it!
