Can't get past grooves

Postby stevebornhei » 10 Jun 2012 10:48

Hey all,

I'm relatively new at lockpicking. I have this lock (duh :) ) but i can't get around the grooves on the side of the lock. I wish I could remember the name of the grooves, but they are pretty much too far inwards, so that it is impossible for me to pick the pins. Any tips?

Hi and welcome our friend from Belgium!

A photograph would help us understand these "grooves" you are writing about. Can you take a photo and upload to http://tinypic.com/ and then Copy/Paste the URL to this forum as http://tinypic.com/mylock.jpg

You may be talking about the warding of a lock, look up "warding".

good luck,

Hey,

Thats exactly it. The wards are too big for my picks to push the pins up. Is there a special tool to bypass the larger wards? Or a specific technique?

Thanks in advance (and wicked site by the way)

Not really 'special tools' per say, just thinner picks
Several pick companies have a 'thin' picks line that are for tighter keyways but even still, locks suck as Schlage have wards that are places so you cant directly lift on the pins straight up and down no matter how thin your picks are, so you have to work from a slight angle at first.
That being said, what are you using for picks Homemade things or others? Picks would be awesome here, for both the lock and the picks.
