FireKing safe with plastic electronic lock???

Postby dlabout » 1 Oct 2004 15:41

Hi all,
I have a question for anyone willing to listen.
I have a FireKing safe purchased here at work to store data tapes.
It is a 1 hour fire protection and is about 1.3 cubic feet.
The issue is that it came in not with a S&G 8550 lock but has some electronic lock on it. Now the company thought this was an accidental upgrade but doesn't want to return it.

The Question is....if the safe is rated to 1700 degrees for an hour what happens to the plastic lock on the face of the safe?
I'm guessing it would be a job for a FireKing safe tech, but who knows.

Thanks for the help.

Lol, i guess the safe is so secure that not only are the burgalurs stopped from getting in by means on heat treatment..but the safes owner is also unable to get in!

I think you must have to address that question to FireKing?

The most important thing is that the safe should maintain its integrity during a fire. If such a fire actually occurred, then the resulting disaster recovery scenario would involve far bigger issues than being unable to get into the data safe for a day or two afterwards. (And there should be offsite backups for extra security in addition to the tapes stored in the safe?)

If the safe is in a fire, the lock face will actually melt (and is designed to do so) This will not affect the actual locking bolts of the safe, which most definitely are not plastic.
*insert witty comment here*

From what I understand from my friends at Double AA lock and safe, the lock will melt off and the remaining wires are then used to open up the safe after the fact. If the wires didn't survive the fire then it must be drilled. I was still suprised by the plastic lock.
The thinking behind it is that the safe is no longer servicable after the fire so the company doesn't want the safe to appear usable.

Thanks one and all for your input.
