MTL Interactive vs Abloy Protec

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

MTL Interactive vs Abloy Protec

Postby pedropais » 24 May 2012 6:52

I'm about to change my door lock and I'm in doubt between the MTL Interactive and Abloy Protec. From what I've read, Abloy Protec is more secure, but MTL Interactive supports having a "maid key", which Abloy Protec does not (as far as I know).

Talking in real world terms what can I expect from one and the other, regarding time to break-in?

I have never heard of Multi Lock having a "maid key" but I also don't deal with Multi lock, I do deal with a lot of Abloy and Protec would be my choice. Remember though that your security is only as good as it's weakest point, there is no point in having super duper locks if you have nice big unsecured windows. Unless what ever you are locking up is at high risk you should be able to get away with spending a bit less on your locks and spend a bit on some other security devices.

Ok, thanks for your reply. But security-wise, how safe is a MTL Interactive? As in, how long will an average lockpicker take to break in?

You can buy tools off the Internet that can allow you to open a Mul-T-Lock Interactive fairly quickly; I have one, and I can open my Interactive cylinders easily (often under a minute, and I'm sure others can do it much faster with practice). I'm not nearly as fast picking free-hand with a set of dimple picks -- but I also don't have much time to practice on dimple locks: I'm sure there are a few people here who are also very fast with those, too.

I see, thanks. I assume that's not the case with Abloy Protec, right?

Someone correct me if I am wrong on this, but outside of key impressioning I don't know of anyone who can pick open a n abloy protec. I do know of other disk detainer locks that there are specialty picks that work, but none of those work on a protec.
Aim for the impossible, because there is no challenge in trying when something is known that it can be done

An MTL Interactive is as safe as an MTL Classic when it comes to picking... in other words, not very good. There can be no comparrisons made between a Protec & an MTL... an Abloy would take you a lifetime to pick just once, they deal with extreme conditions better (I've frozen one to -40 with ice in the keyway and it still opened smoothly), they look awesome on the door, and errrr, it's an Abloy :)
What a load of old BiLocks!!!!

I'm probably 0 for 400 in looking for safes behind wall paintings

Threads like this are laughable really.

It seems once someone learns lock picking they feel they need to put unpickable locks all over thier houses.

Not having a rant here i used to be the same... Until i got locked out.

Installing a protec would be ridiculous imo unless you happen to have a real high risk business and in which case you may also want to invest in some steel doors and window bars.

A multlock would be more than sufficient for home use in anti snap form providing its fitted to a decent door and with good matching hardware.

Since locking myself out of my fortress of a home i downgraded the locks to British standard antisnaps so at least i stand a chance :P
