Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Two Abus 83/45's gutted--you never know what you'll get...

Postby cyrano138 » 23 Jun 2012 1:07

I took apart a couple of Abus's that were by all outward appearances the same, but found that they were very different inside. One is master key-able, and one had been re-pinned with security pins that are clearly not original. I'm not sure what the pin with the two single serrations is. They don't look deep enough to be a security feature.

I tried to shrink these down before posting, so I apologize if it didn't work right. I don't think I can edit.

Here's the Abus that has "700 patented" written on the plug. Imagine how stupid I felt, after working on this lock for a while, when I found out that I could have just opened it with a blank.

@cyrano138:

It is never a bad idea to try using a blank key to open locks that are new old stock
or that have a newer looking cylinder in a re-keyable padlock body...

Sometimes people order a zero bitted lock not knowing what it is...

I got two of these Abus's in a box full of locks from another member here so I didn't even think of it. Anyway it's still good spool pin practice. Thanks for the advice, though. :)
