The "hole in the policy" is covered. The company is required to notify us when one of the signatories is not longer employed. They may authorize a second person if they wish. Likewise if a company changes hands the contract stipulates we are notified. We then make a new contract with the new owners. Accordingly we have acted in good faith and with due diligence and care in establishing the authenticity of the letter and the identification of the holder. We also require the original key which the customer is responsible for controlling. If someone brought in a forgery and the original key then the customer is culpable for not maintaing control of the original key.

We have used this policy succesfully for over 30 years.

My wife is the legal council for the company since last year. If you can cite case law to the contrary I'm sure she would love to review our policy and make sure we aren't being negligent.

I have a few Bilock systems with my locksmith and that's what they do as well.

Although, they have my signature and details on their database, so I could write a letter for someone else to go and get a key cut.

But, when I get additional keys cut they always take down my driver's license details in some book that records who picked up the keys.

Evan brings up a good point. We have acquired buildings where the prior owners have installed fancy Medecos on common doors, they were still in tip-top shape. We were passed the master ring for all the Medeco lock along with the extra copies, code cards, etc. but the locksmith the prior owners used refused to make duplicates for us. He asked for our information and said that we were not authorized to get keys. Pain in the a**. He recommended that we rekey with him, costing another pretty penny, and pay $10/key. Sad story, those locks... they were nice.

Thanks for everyone's input on GMS MX. Interesting system, I'd classify it as "disposable (please recycle) restricted locks". My MX keys are brass and wear fast, the plug too. :x

What is the pricing the locksmiths out there charge out there per cylinder? Per key?

Thanks!

I believe with the Medeco system the card can be assigned on different levels. The example you are using may be assigned to one specific end user, hence the reluctance to cut keys for the new owners.

You can opt for nickel silver blanks. I haven't had durability problems with the plugs. I am doing a job this week, 800 keys at $4.00 each and two cylinders for $16.98 plus 2 rekeys at $10 each, plus a service call $60. I normally do the keys for $5.00. We don't use brass pins for these type of installs.
