what does your work space look like? bring your photos!

Postby atticRR » 13 Jul 2012 22:31

Hey all,
after seeing all the absolutely amazing work on this site ive really gotten curious about everyones set up. Where do you all do the amazing things you do? what tools do you use? whats your favorite tool?

I'll start. i work outside my front door on a folding chair, with no table, terrible light(unless its daytime) with the top of a bucket or my toolbox as a bench. the toolbox came from work, some guys wife donated it with all his sign making tools inside it and some other boxes, he was incarcerated in an asylum. My box had a brinks brass padlock on it, locked of course. I took it home to pick it open, after hours i had to cut it  and since then i'm sure ive logged 10 continuous hours trying to open it-no luck! anyway, the only power tool i have is a dremel, everything else is manual.

heres my picture, lets see what you got!

Not really a workspace, but while I'm practicing getting the feeling down, I practice while watching TV with the family or laying in bed before I go to sleep.

I just moved, so my "workspace" is stacked with boxes. It's too shameful to post a picture. I hope to have it cleared out before too long and be able to set up my work benches, vice and key machines again.

For making picks though, my favorite tools are a wet grinder, hand files and sandpaper. If it's something I really want to be nice then I finish it off with my Dremel with a felt wheel and some polishing compound.

shameful?!? you must not have seen my picture! lol, seriously though, when you get unpacked take a pic, im really curious about the setups others have. You're so lucky you got to move! (hopefully it was a positive move) we have two rooms and three people-my wife and our kid who sleeps in the kitchen. mucho lame-o. Hopefully we find a place before our heads explode.

What kind of wet grinder are you talking about?

It was a positive move. Annoying, but it worked out for the best. My old home got bulldozed for a freeway. Lost a lot of money on the sale, but found a motivated seller and got a good discount on a bigger place, plus a good interest rate so it worked out ok in the end. I miss my shed though. Only built it a year ago, 200 square feet with a 16' ceiling and an 80 square foot second-story loft inside. Also had a wide awning along one side so the kids can keep their bikes out of the rain without having to unlock the shed every time they wanted to use them. The awning was also built to be a load-bearing balcony; it was sort of like a treehouse for the kids up on top of it.

I bought an inexpensive wet grinder from Harbor Freight. Like this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-wet ... 35098.html
Although I think I only paid around $35 for it back when I bought it around 15 or 20 years ago. Plus the wet stone on mine is a very fine grit white colored stone. The one in that pic looks almost like they're using the same coarse type of stone for the wet side as they are for the dry side. The one they sell now has very poor reviews, so either I got lucky or they've changed them since I bought mine because I really like it. The wet side removes material nice and slowly so you have good control for a very nice edge when sharpening things, and with the water the material never heats up and ruins the temper.

oh man, i'm sad about your shed! that grinder looks pretty cool, i really like the wet grinding aspect of it, especially for grinding picks. Hope you get settled in soon, even if the move is to a better place, moving SUCKS!

This is where I do most of my re-keing of cylinders, key cutting, and impressioning. I pick just about anywhere! Lol

I got this shelving unit from a Kmart that closed down. I put swivel wheels on the bottom so it is moveable.
