Weiserlock Smartkey Tumbler Replacement

Postby Lewis » 20 Jul 2012 8:52

Hi Everyone,

I think I've put this post in the right section, if anyone thinks different and that I may have better luck elsewhere please let me know and I'll see if a mod could kindly move it...

I have a Weiserlock Powerbolt 1000:

I thought I was buying it with regular tumbler, but when it arrived I see it's Smartkey! I need to have a regular tumbler as I need to master key it but I remember hearing with the kwikset models (which I believe are identical?), a regular replacement tumbler won't fit and you have to drill out the bracket on the back piece of the lock.

My question would be whether anyone knows of a tumbler that will fit (both size wise and aesthetically) which I can put into this lock and be able to master?

Thanks!
Lewis

You are right. It wont fit.
The housing is not cut to receive a bible.

Your best bet is to purchase a NON-Smart key weiser deadbolt.
A 9471 will work. You will need to replace the backset as well because they use different tail pieces.
You will also need to modify the inside thumb turn to accomodate the new tail piece.

Smartkey sucks IMO. Neat idea, poor execution.

Out of curiosity, why does it need to be masterkeyed?
The purpose of having keyless entry is.....well, just that, don't need a key.
The cylinder really is only an override in case of dead batteries or failure.
In fact I find that people that have neglected to replace the batteries and used the key for awhile
have trouble with them later when they do decide to use the keypad again as the friction clutch
no longer offer enough friction for the motor to turn it. The motor runs but the bolt wont extend.
